This thesis was prepared on a typewriter before the days of Desk Top Publishing. All diagrams and formulae were hand drawn and photocopied. Photographs were also photocopied. The optical system devised for the instrument developed and described in the thesis is the subject of British Provisional Patent no. 4333/64 claimed by United Power Company in the name of G. K. Caulton.
