dc.description.abstractLight is often used in high energy particle detectors as a means of locating the passage of a charged particle, or for determining its energy through the use of "calorimeters". In this lecture Professor Hobson will look at some of the ways in which particles are detected using light, the development of a particular large scale system for the "Compact Muon Solenoid" experiment, now nearing completion at CERN, Switzerland, and touch briefly on the possible detection of the "Higgs boson" using this detector in the next few years.en
