Euripides’ Herakles is a structurally challenging play, with a family-in-peril first movement that seems to be resolved by the timely return of a triumphant Herakles. This comfortingly predictable narrative is shattered by the appearance of Iris (Hera’s vengeful emissary) and Lyssa (‘frenzy’), who transform the returned Herakles into a crazed, delusional killer who murders his own wife and children.en_US
